He is author of more than 500 papers in the fields of Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry of Cultural Heritage, Electrochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Biotechnology. In particular he has prepared, characterized and applied several biosensors, based on immobilized enzymes or plant tissues, for the determination of substances of clinical, pharmaceutical and environmental interest and for the dating of cellulosic archaeological finds.

He also studied the application of chemical and biological methods to the degradation and removal of pollutants (surfactants, hydrocarbons, pesticides, heavy metals) in civil and industrial effluents.
He has participated in more than 500 National and International Congresses.
Author of 6 books in the fields of Industrial and Applied Analysis, Analytical Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Philosophy of Chemistry, Scientific Museology and Chemistry for Art.

President of the Division of Analytical Chemistry of the Italian Chemical Society in 1989-1990 and of the Division of Chemistry of the Environment and Cultural Heritage in 2004-2006.
